James D. (JD) Ford’s most ardent desire is to serve the people of Indiana as a State Senator for the 29th District. JD’s interests turned to public service at an early age, largely due to the careers of his grandparents.  His maternal grandfather was a city councilman and his paternal grandmother was a city auditor during his childhood.  From them, JD inherited a strong sense of civic duty and understanding of true servant leadership by holding leadership positions throughout high school and college. Additionally, JD grew up in a very blue-collar household. JD's father was a truck driver, recently retired, for their county highway department and his mother works in an assisted care facility for the elderly. Not only did JD have wonderful role models with his grandparents, but he saw how hard his mom and dad worked to put food on the table and the lights on at the house.

JD went on to pursue his public interests by enrolling in the Political Science/Criminal Justice program at The University of Akron in Akron, Ohio.  JD was the first person in his family to go to college. JD understands what it means to be a first-generation college student. In addition to his primary coursework, he also completed two minor courses of study (Pre-Law and Conflict Management) and served as an intern for the Ohio Senate.  Perhaps more than anything he had done before, this internship laid the foundation for his passion for public service that would affect his personal goals from then on, while providing him valuable experience in the workings of state government and campaigning. Since then, JD has worked on numerous campaigns.

Upon graduation, JD began his professional career as a Leadership & Education Consultant for Theta Chi Fraternity, Inc., of which he is a proud member.  During this time, he continued his commitment to servant leadership by assisting hundreds of undergraduate men to obtain leadership training, develop civic responsibility, and promote the fraternity’s mission.  His work was rewarded by the Grand Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity with the Citation of Honor, one of the highest awards given to alumni of the fraternity. The Fraternity has also awarded recognized JD with the David E. DeVol award and the George F. Kilavos Award.

JD returned to college to pursue his Master of Science degree in Education with an emphasis in Human Services from Purdue University.  During this period, he worked full-time as a Graduate Assistant for Residential Education and was quickly promoted to Assistant Director of Residential Education all while taking his graduate coursework at the Purdue-Calumet campus in Hammond, IN.  As a live-in staff member, JD impacted the Purdue community greatly and was recognized by his student staff with the “Be the change you wish to see” Award and other departmental awards. Also during his time at Purdue Calumet, JD was fortunate to travel to Beijing, China to teach English for several weeks.

After graduating with his Master's degree, he went back to work for his Fraternity. He started as the Director of for Recruitment and Expansion at the International Headquarters of Theta Chi Fraternity, Inc. In this role, he has overseen the fraternity’s largest expansion in over twenty years. He was then promoted to Senior Director of Recruitment and Expansion. Then was promoted to the Chief of External Relations.

After Theta Chi Fraternity, J.D. worked as the Director of Development for The Julian Center. Currently, J.D. is substitute-teaching, which allows him to have an inside look at public education about what teachers and students are experiencing.

JD is a home-owner in Wayne Township, where he resides with his dog, Stella.

In his free time, he enjoys hanging out with friends, reading biographies, going to the movies, swimming, biking and volunteering his time.
